Varick’s Children

The seeds of Varick’s Children are found in early work of the Department in the 1930s. Under the leadership of Dr. Helen Scott-Carter, a resolution was submitted at the 47th General Conference proposing that Varick’s Children become the formal name of the ministry. The resolution was passed.

Colors

The colors for Varick’s children are red (symbolizing the blood of Jesus) and white (symbolizing the innocence that children bring to the kingdom of God.)

Emblem

The emblem for Varick’s Children is in the shape of a heart, symbolizing Jesus’ love for little children, In the left arch is the name of our denomination and in the right arch is the name of the children’s ministry. The large “C” filled with the pictures of children illustrates children of all ages. The full version of the emblem also shows the date 1796 for the founding of The A.M.E. Zion Church and the date 1996 for the birth year of Varick’s Children as a ministry within the Christian Education Department. Completing the emblem is a profile of James Varick, first general superintendent (bishop) of The A.M.E. Zion Church for whom the ministry is named.

Mission and Goals

The mission of Varick’s Children Ministry is to foster spiritual formation, leadership development, scholastic reengagement and cultural enrichment for children (up to age 12) in The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
