THE DEPARTMENT

The Christian Education Department in the AME Zion Church is a comprehensive department in the denomination. It has a long history of development and has ex- tended influence in the development of the connection. The Department exists for “the promotion and supervision of the Christian training and development of the entire membership of the denomination.”

Faith Formation

The Department’s primary task is to undergird the faith life and discipleship of the members of the AME Zion Church. This is done through the quarterly church school literature, the Church School Herald Journal, faith centered curriculum and devotionals, resources for liturgical days and observances, and the annual Winter Meeting. In the local church, Christian education workers are admonished to oversee a consistent program that provides the congregation with “guidance and development in the Christian way of life” (Discipline, par. 542)

Leadership Development
The Department’s leadership development work has historically been embodied in the opportunities afforded to our officers in VICYC, ACE, and YACM. We are especially excited about the potential for VICYC and YACM to develop emerging leaders and the ways that ACE partners with us to galvanize educational leaders. CED is also utilizing technology to build connection and strengthen the network of Zion’s Christian educators. Stay tuned and plan to join the next Family Meeting or webinar series. Local church leaders have a great opportunity to provide leadership training and to nurture spiritual gifts in the congregation.

Education

Lastly, the Department seeks to be an advocate for education through the Schools and Colleges Division which governs our AME Zion schools and colleges. Every year, the Department grants upwards of $20,000 in scholarships for secondary and post-secondary students through the efforts of VICYC, ACE, YACM, and the Acolyte Ministry. The history of the AME Zion Church includes an ardent presence at the front lines of the academic advancement of our Black people. We must continue this legacy!
